The Campus

By any reckoning, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the premier universities in the country. Long known for its strong departments, it has also become a leader in the development of interdisciplinary programs. Its commitment to excellence in scholarship and research is matched by its commitment to excellence in graduate and undergraduate education.

As a land-grant institution charted in 1867, it provides undergraduate and graduate education in more that 150 fields of study, conducts both theoretical and applied research, and provides public service to the state and the nation. The campus includes some 200 buildings on nearly 1,500 acres, with 2,000 faculty members serving 29,294 undergraduates and 11,066 graduate and professional students.

Gregory Hall

The Department of Philosophy is housed in Gregory Hall, along with the College of Communications and the Department of History. Gregory provides ample classroom space, ranging in size from small seminar rooms to large lecture rooms. The departmental office is located on the first floor, faculty offices are located in the eastern wing of the second, third, and fourth floors, and graduate assistant offices are located on the second and fourth floors. A computer lab for philosophy graduate students is located on the fourth floor. Gregory Hall is ADA accessible.

While the bulk of philosophy classes are held in Gregory Hall, a small number of classes are held in several different locations across campus.

The Library

The University Library, the third largest academic collection in the nation, is among the campus's most significant resources for undergraduate and graduate study. More than 17 million resources are housed throughout the main library building and 40 departmental libraries and divisions. Only Harvard and Yale boast larger collections. The Library's computerized catalog system was the first in the world to serve as a primary access to a large academic library. Faculty and graduate students gain access to the collections within the various libraries or via computer from their offices or homes.

The History and Philosophy Library is just one of the many branches of the University Library, and is located in room 246 of the University Library, next door to Gregory Hall, the philosophy department's home.
