Biography
- He began his career as a classicist and is the author of The Platonic Cosmology (Brill, 1985). Since the mid-1980s, he has chiefly written on social issues affecting gay and lesbian Americans. His essay "Gay Basics" has been anthologized over thirty times.
He is the author of Gays/Justice: A Study of Ethics, Society, and Law, published in 1988 by Columbia University Press.
In 1989, he founded for Columbia the book series Between Men, Between Women: Lesbian and Gay Studies, which was one of the first institutionalized forms of gay studies in the country.

In 1992, Beacon Press brought out his controversial book Gay Ideas: Outing and Other Controversies, which won the Lambda Literary Awards' "Editors' Choice" Award for the best gay book of 1992 in the eyes of the Awards' sponsor, Lambda Book Report magazine.
In 1994, Beacon published his popular book, A More Perfect Union: Why Straight America Must Stand Up For Gay Rights - a handshake of greeting from gay experience to the hearts and minds of mainstream America.
A public intellectual, Professor Mohr has also written for magazines and newspapers, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, The Advocate, The Nation, Reason magazine, the Chicago Tribune and the Boston Globe.
He also writes on the arts, decorative arts, and architecture and is an expert on the American Arts & Crafts Movement. His articles in these areas have appeared in Architectural Record, Art Issues, the Journal of the American Art Pottery Association, the Tabby, Flash Point, American Bungalow magazine, Style 1900, and Old House Journal. In 2003, the University of Illinois Press published his book, Pottery, Politics, Art: George Ohr and the Brothers Kirkpatrick, a look at abjection and grotesquerie in American ceramics. In January 2005, Columbia University Press published Mohr's sixth book, The Long Arc of Justice: Lesbian and Gay Marriage, Equality, and Rights.
