Graduate Students

Graduate students in residence usually number around forty. Most are candidates for the Ph.D., although some seek only the M.A. Students in the Ph.D. program normally complete their formal course work and other predissertation requirements within three years, and then devote several more years to their dissertations. Many graduate students serve as teaching assistants, thereby both obtaining financial aid and also gaining experience that is an important part of their graduate training. Beginning in their third or fourth year, they typically are given the opportunity to plan and teach their own sections of introductory courses. Most of those who receive their Ph.D. obtain teaching positions in philosophy.
