An Invitation to Membership
The North American Nietzsche Society is an interdisciplinary
Society formed in 1980 to promote the exchange of ideas
among Nietzsche scholars and to encourage scholarly research and
creative work concerning Nietzsche. Many of its members are
associated with the fields of philosophy and German
literature. Others are associated with related disciplines in the
humanities and social sciences.
The Society pursues the purposes described above in many ways, including:
the organization of programs at each of the divisional
meetings of the American Philosophical Association, in which
papers are presented and symposia are held;
cooperation with other Societies and groups in the
organization of scholarly programs on other occasions;
an arrangement with International Studies in Philosophy for the publication of papers presented in its programs, in a special annual NANS issue;
the collection and distribution of information relating to Nietzsche studies to its members through a newsletter and other mailings;
the provision of other services to its members (e.g. discounts on works on Nietzsche negotiated with publishers).
Membership in the Society is open to college and university
teachers, graduate students and others, from North America and
elsewhere. Specialization in
Nietzsche studies is not a condition of membership; to become a
member, one need only have a genuine interest in aspects of
Nietzsches thought and
writings. Membership in good standing involves the payment of
modest annual dues. (Regular dues are currently $30 for those who
are employed, and $20 for graduate students and those who are
unemployed or retired.)
The benefits of membership in the Society to anyone interested
in Nietzsche are considerable. The payment of regular dues
entitles members to receive the annual NANS issue of ISP, the
Society newsletter and other information, the discounts mentioned
above, and other services, as well as to have papers on
Nietzsche considered for inclusion in Society programs and for
publication under the auspices of the Society.
